Art 1A-1B

This one or two semester course covers the basic elements and principles of art and design. Through the skills learned in the classes,
students are encouraged to develop critical thinking, originality and creativity, new vocabulary and self-expression both orally and
artistically. With the teacher’s guidance students will develop skills in constructive criticism which will promote artistic development
and self thought. Grades are not based on talent but on effort and work produced. Most materials are provided but students may be required
to purchase some supplies. Fulfills the University of California “f” requirement as a college preparatory elective in the Visual and
Performing Arts. Open to all students.

3-Dimensional Art & Design

This course is a technical and aesthetic exploration. Students develop knowledge of and artistic skills in a variety of visual arts media
and technical process. They apply the knowledge and skill in creating original 3-dimensional artworks based on personal experiences and by
demonstrating the process. The student will participate in a wide range of experiences using additive or subtractive sculpture techniques
designed to build artistic and creative confidence. Students learn how to perceive the world in an artistic way by refining their sensory
perceptions of works of art, objects in nature, events, and the environment. They identify visual elements and principles of design using
the language of the visual arts. Students will explore the role of the visual arts in human history and culture. They investigate universal
themes and concepts in historical and contemporary periods and styles in cultures throughout the world. Meets the University of California “f”
requirement as a college preparatory elective in the Visual and Performing Arts. Open to all students.

Theater Arts

This course is a year long course that may be taken for only one semester. The student will be introduced to the basics of theater and
performance production. The focus is on creating a character through improvisation, body language, stage movement, voice production and
research. The basics of set construction, scenery and costume design, and stage makeup will be introduced. (If taken as a year long course,
Theater Arts fulfulls the University of California “f” requirement as a college preparatory elective in the Visual and Performing Arts.)

Choral Music

This course introduces the student to basic choral music concepts. Proper tone production, basic rhythm patterns, as well as learning correct
conduct in a concert are stressed. Students also become familiar with common terms encountered in written music and the elements of basic
sight-reading. This class provides music for the monthly liturgies, the Madrigal, the spring musical, as well as other scheduled events.
Meets the University of California “f” requirement as a college preparatory elective in the Visual and Performing Arts. Open to all students.
