Community Service Program

The philosophy of Mercy High School is focused on developing the whole person as one who recognizes personal gifts and contributes to making the world a better place.

As Christians, we are called to love each other. By noticing and responding to the needs of others we acknowledge the dignity of all. Service is a way of living. It is an opportunity to discover an individual call to use gifts and talents for the survival of all creation.

The community service program at Mercy High School consists of time spent with persons who are may be needy either developmentally, physically, academically, or economically. It is time working with charitable agencies that respond to the needs of all God’s creation which helps students discover who they are and how they can live Jesus’ message of love.

Program requirements:

  • Students who enter as freshman must provide 80 hours of service over four years
    • Transfer students’ hours may be pro-rated
    • 1/4 of the total 80 hours must be devoted to a specific commitment
    • Students may volunteer 5 hours per year on major school fundraisers
  • Service can be done during the school year or during the summer
    • Summer project hours must be turned in by September 1st in order to receive credit for the hours
    • Hours completed during the school year must be turned in at the end of each semester to receive credit
  • Community service projects must be pre-approved by the Community Service Commission
  • Community service forms are available through the Religious Studies Department or online and must be filled out and signed off at the time of the service
  • Whole school projects are planned at least once a year and are credited to students in the front office
  • A total of four reflection essays are required – one essay per 20 hours of service
    • Essay topics are available through the Religious Studies Department or online
  • A final community service reflection essay and presentation is due at the end of the student’s senior year
